The College’s Maintaining Appropriate Boundaries and Preventing Sexual Abuse policy is currently being reviewed. The draft Boundary Violations policy updates the College’s expectations for physicians to establish and maintain appropriate boundaries.
A draft Advice to the Profession: Maintaining Appropriate Boundaries document has also been developed to support the draft policy. The draft advice document provides general guidance and contextual information to help physicians interpret and apply the College’s expectations as set out in the draft policy.

Key Features of the Draft Policy
The draft policy generally maintains the principles and expectations of the current policy but a few clarifications and additions have been made. For example: there is now a definitions section; we provide more guidance around the presence of third parties at examinations; and the draft policy sets out expectations related to social and financial/business relationships between physicians and patients.
Have your say
We want to hear your thoughts on the draft policy and the draft advice to the profession document. For example, we are interested to know:
- How can the draft policy and/or advice document be improved?
- Are there issues not addressed in the draft policy and/or advice document that should be?
- It there any content in the draft policy and/or advice document that is unnecessary?
Please submit your comments by August 2, 2019.
